PROPS: Feel free
to bring in props or items, which reflect a special interest or
hobby.
CLOTHING: In portraiture we want attention drawn to the subject’s face. Clothing choices should be made wisely with the objective of flattering the subject while maintaining a focus on the face. Avoid clothing that draws the eye to bright, busy, or graphic patterns. COLORS: Wear colors that complement your skin tone, hair color and eyes. Simple, solid colors photograph best. To accentuate subject’s faces, limit the number of colors. Generally, darker tones have a slenderizing effect while lighter colors draw attention first. GROUP CLOTHING: For larger groups, coordinate clothing with complementary colors. The color palette of everyone in the portrait should have a sense of visual unity. A common color of pants/skirts can provide continuity while individual families may vary shirt/blouse colors.
CLOTHING FOR BLACK & WHITE: For images ultimately printed in black & white – mid-toned colors photograph best. Reds and greens are ideal. Limit the number of contrasting tones as they detract attention away from the subject’s face.
